Graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1979), Master in Organic Chemistry from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1982), PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1988) and doctorate "sandwich" in Organic Chemistry - Center National de la Recherche Scientifique (October 1987 to January 1988). I´m currently a full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Experience in the area of Chemistry, with an emphasis on ORGANIC CATALYSIS, working mainly on the following topics: biodiesel production; synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of niobium phosphate; synthesis and characterization of mesoporous materials with an emphasis on mesoporous silicas and mesoporous niobium phosphate and application of cation exchange resins as catalysts in organic reactions. We can highlight the study of the esterification reaction of fatty acids, benzylation of aromatic compounds and acetalization of aldehydes with long chain alcohols. The main application of mesoporous materials is in the production of biodiesel via transesterification of vegetable oils and in the esterification of fatty acids. It has also been active in the synthesis of glycerol derivatives and cellulosic biomass (derived from levulinic acid) as lubricants and surfactants.

The laboratory works on the following topics: nanomaterials, inorganic materials, materials for electrochemical devices, photocatalysts, mineral chemistry and agrominerals. The main objective is to understand the relationship between structural issues and chemical properties. The development of new synthetic routes is also highlighted. The laboratory's projects aim at the development of new nanostructured materials with application in fuel cell electrodes, photocatalysis in the environmental area and energy storage. As well as in the development of a process for the use of natural minerals. The following current projects stand out: 1) MATERIALS FOR APPLICATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOCATALYSIS. Development of new nanostructured materials with application in photocatalysis in the environmental area, for the decomposition of organic pigments in aqueous medium. 2) MATERIALS FOR THE GENERATION AND STORAGE OF ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATION. Preparation, characterization and structural studies of nanostructured mixed oxides for the development of new fuel cell electrodes. 3) MATERIALS FOR ADSORPTION AND PHOTODEGRADATION OF POLLUTANTS. It aims to synthesize and characterize composites formed by a material with a high surface area, Carbon Black, with a magnetic semiconductor material, to be used as dye adsorbents, commonly used in the textile industry, and which also act as photocatalysts in the degradation of these dyes.
