General Requirements for Graduate Degrees
Degree of Master of Science:
1) A minimum of 24 units of graduate work is required. Included in these units are at least 18 units of graduate work at the Chemistry Graduate Program.
(1 working unit = 15 hours)
2) The student must complete the graduate work with an accumulated grade-point average in courses of at least 1.7
3) The student must complete the research work described in the plan of study approved by the research adviser. The choice of the research adviser must be made no later than sixty days after admission to the Graduate Program.
4) After completing the plan of study, the student must present a research report to an Examination Committee whose members must be approved by the Board of the Graduate Program.
5) A minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months of residence at the Chemistry Institute is required for the Master’s degree.
Degree of Doctor of Phylosophy
1) A minimum of 30 units of graduate work is required. Included in these units are at least 22 units of graduate work at the Graduate Program. (1 working unit = 15 hours)
2) The student must complete the graduate work with an accumulated grade-point average in courses of at least 2.0
3) The student has to be approved in the Candidacy Examination (Qualifying) before completing 18 months of admission to the Graduate Program. The examination consists of an oral presentation of the research work already accomplished and the proposal of an original research project not related to the subject of the thesis. The Candidacy Examination Committee must be approved by the Board of the Graduate Program.
4) The student must complete the research work described in the plan of study approved by the research adviser. The choice of the research adviser must be made no later than sixty days after admission to the Graduate Program.
5) After completing the plan of study, the student must present the Thesis to an Examination Committee whose members must the approved by the Board of the Graduate Program.
6) A minimum of 24 months and a maximum of 48 months of residence at the Chemistry Institute is required for the Ph.D. degree.
